Improving water access
Prime Consulting has a strong history in rural irrigation and water supply improvement and in designing, trialling and adopting new approaches to water management. Much of our work focuses on community level systems, where small, affordable interventions can create significant benefits for households and local economies.

Examples of our water resources work

Prime Consulting designed and delivered 20 low cost irrigation structures in Bamyan Province as part of the Agricultural Support Programme (2011 to 2017). Built using locally available materials, these structures helped communities hold back water during dry periods and introduce new crops.
More than 1,760 households benefited. Community members contributed time, labour and problem solving, building a strong sense of ownership. We also supported enabling activities, including access negotiations, community engagement and strengthening Water User Authorities.

Prime Consulting oversaw the construction of a 3.6 kilometre trapezoid concrete channel in Khawal, Bamyan, improving water efficiency for six villages and more than 500 people. Concrete turnouts improved control of water use, while pedestrian crossing points protected the channel’s structure. Twenty two washpoints were added at the request of local women, providing safe places to wash clothes and dishes and creating informal social spaces.

Between 2017 and 2019 we helped prepare the Arghandab Integrated Water Resources Project with FCG ANZDEC. The project aimed to improve water and electricity supply for 500,000 residents of Kandahar City and 230,000 rural residents. This included increasing storage capacity at Dahla Dam.

From 2014 to 2017 Prime Consulting redesigned the business plan for Phase II of the Comprehensive Agriculture and Rural Development Facility in Afghanistan, a GBP 56 million programme delivered with Atos Consulting. This work involved reviewing and improving Economic Development Package designs for horticulture and livestock value chains across 11 provinces.
Initiatives included trellising and drip irrigation for vineyards in Parwan Province, encouraging more efficient water use. We also supported the design and construction of 229 kilometres of irrigation canals and three water storage reservoirs to irrigate approximately 37,389 hectares of agricultural land nationwide.
